True" music in the spring of 2018, the North Carolina Department of Transportation was one of ten organizations to be awarded a spot in the FAA's innovative drone integration pilot program, or IPP. It is an honor for us in North Carolina to be selected for the FAA's UAS integration pilot program. Since the Wright brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903, our state has been at the forefront of aviation innovation. The tradition continues today with this announcement. The NCDOT's integration pilot program is a big event for our state. We are fostering aviation, and with this opportunity, we hope to be the first in package-delivery, medical package delivery, and standard package delivery. We have focused on infrastructure, and we continue to prioritize aviation infrastructure. UAS, or drones, are the next step. The program provides a chance for state, local, and tribal governments to partner with the private sector in order to accelerate the safe and beneficial incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems, also known as drones. This program will help gather knowledge that can be used in crafting future rules and regulations around complex drone operations. There is significant interest in this technology and the opportunities it presents. While we have concerns and challenges, we believe we have a progressive state and group of legislators who want to take action to keep North Carolina at the forefront. We are hopeful that the IPP will build on the existing research and commercialization efforts of the FAA, allowing us to overcome the remaining regulatory hurdles. This will enable us to expand commercial opportunities while still prioritizing airspace safety. NCDOT will test unmanned package-delivery in urban, suburban, and rural areas, ultimately allowing healthcare providers and other local businesses to make critical deliveries faster and at a reduced cost.
