I think this is one of the most important questions that you need to know the answer to. A parent cannot participate in their child's program, whether it be a general program or a special program, in reality, if they don't see the documents that the rest of the team are relying upon. You, as a parent, have the right to review, access, and even copy your child's educational records. In California, you have the right to obtain those records within five business days of a request. Basically, what you want to do is make sure that you can give copies of everything that you can obtain, not just the special file which would include IEP documents, assessments, progress reports, and the things that you've probably already been given. Or even the cumulative file, which includes progress reports that are generally like report cards, discipline records, and things like that. You want to make sure you get the other stuff, the behind the scenes records that are often really important to how your child is doing. Examples of this include teacher notes and folders, protocols and notes from testing that anybody has done an assessment of your child has kept in their file, emails and other correspondents, not just emails that have been sent to you, but emails that have been sent back and forth between teachers and providers and other persons, discipline records, service logs if they have notes about how your child did in...
