Nightbeat's Joe Vasquez tells us it comes down to a disagreement over proof of residency. It's a rite of passage in California, wasting away too many hours to count, processing paperwork at the DMV. And now we're learning that for millions, that wait is getting even longer. The new Real ID system has a glitch that will require even more time and patience. "I had just gotten my driver's license renewed about three weeks ago, but I didn't have the necessary extra documents for this new upgraded Real ID. So, I came back in here to just furnish those documents, but that took the better part of three hours," says a frustrated Californian. The Real ID is the new identification card with the special golden bear stamp. The federal Homeland Security Administration is overseeing this program, which provides an extra layer of security for folks wanting to use their state driver's licenses or IDs to board airplanes, army bases, and other federal facilities. California has already sent out 3.2 million Real IDs, but now the feds have informed the state that the DMV has not been asking for enough documentation. "I was in the military before, and you learn to get in a line to find out what line you're getting into. This is what it reminds me of. This is, at least to another degree, extremely disorganized," expresses a frustrated Californian.
