True" welcome to this video on transferring credits and dual enrollment for schools outside of the Virginia community college system. Students can earn transfer credit for courses taken at institutions outside of Virginia Tech. It is important to make sure that the class taken outside of Virginia Tech is equivalent to the course requirement you plan to fulfill at Virginia Tech. The transfer equivalency database is available to help students determine equivalencies to courses taken at an institution in the U.S that is not part of the Virginia community college system. You can find a link to this database posted below this video. Please follow along as I demonstrate how to search the transfer equivalency database. To begin, select the state where the college or university is located. Then click "Create College List." In this example, I'm going to choose New Jersey. Then, select the name of the college in that state. I'm going to choose Bergen Community College. Then click "Find Courses." You can then search for courses by subject, though I usually just click "Submit" so I can see all of the subjects at one time. As you scroll down, you'll see a list of classes students have taken at the institution you chose on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, you will see the Virginia Tech equivalent courses listed. The equivalencies are determined as a result of the appropriate Virginia Tech department reviewing the course content. In this example, you'll see that MAT 281 at the school I've chosen is equivalent to Math 1226 Calculus 2. If the course you have taken or planned to take outside of Virginia Tech is listed in the database with an equivalent course listed at VT, it means that particular course has been evaluated in the past and should transfer to Virginia Tech.
